Active vs. Passive Investing: Understanding the Difference

Josh Cohen, CFA, is a Managing Director, Head of Client Solutions for PGIM DC Solutions. In this capacity, Josh is responsible for distribution of the PGIM DC Solutions multi-asset portfolios, including target date, managed accounts and retirement income solutions working with consultants and plan sponsors. Josh also provides thought leadership to large Defined Contribution plans on investment issues. Josh works with the DC Solutions team on developing innovative solutions and thought leadership to help plan participants accumulate the wealth needed for their retirement.
Prior to joining PGIM, Josh was the Head of Defined Contribution for Russell Investments where he was responsible for the leadership, strategic direction, and growth of Russell Investments’ U.S. Defined Contribution (DC) asset management business. Prior to his twelve years at Russell Investments, Josh spent nine years at Hewitt Associates.
Highly regarded throughout the industry and a recognized DC thought leader, Josh served a three-year term (2013-2015) as a member of the Department of Labor’s ERISA Advisory Council on policies and regulations affecting employee benefit plans governed by the Employee Retirement Income Security Act.
Josh is also actively involved with several industry organizations including the Employee Benefit Research Institute (EBRI), serving as a member of the Board of Trustees and past Chair of the executive committee, and the Defined Contribution Institutional Investment Association (DCIIA), where he previously served on the executive committee and as the Chair of the Retirement Research Board.
For 2016, Josh was identified by Chief Investment Officer (CIO) magazine as one of the world’s most influential investment thought leaders by being named to the annual Knowledge Brokers list. This marked the fourth consecutive year Josh has received this recognition.
Josh earned his BA from the University of Michigan and an MBA from the University of Chicago. Josh holds the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation.
